The Gates standard

No short-cuts. Not in a good economy or a hard one.

Quality control comes first in how we run every job. That means top-level mechanics, a complete and proper installation, and a reputation in this community we have had to earn.

  • A supervisor on every job

Project supervisors with 15 to 30 years of hands-on experience and formal training are on site for the whole installation. We never hand the day-to-day to whoever we hired last week.

  • Tear-off, almost always

Removing the existing roof is almost always the longest-lasting option. Layering over old material is cheaper today and costs you years later.

  • A person answers the phone

We respond to your calls personally and promptly, and we're available around the clock for emergencies.

  • Insured, and bondable

Certificates for General Liability and New York State Workers' Compensation on request. Performance & payment bonds are available for commercial, state and federal work.

What we build

Steep roofs, flat roofs, and everything under them.

No single roof specification fits every building. Every system has strengths and weaknesses, and we walk you through them before you commit.

ResidentialSteep slope · over 4 in. per foot

Residential roofing

Most homes here wear asphalt shingle, and more every year choose metal. We start by asking what the new roof has to fix: active leaks, ice building at the eaves, heat loss, or an attic that can't breathe.

  • Asphalt shingles
  • Metal roof systems
  • Composite slate
  • Wood shake
  • Single-ply membranes

Commercial & industrialLow slope · under 3 in. per foot

Commercial & industrial roofing

Flat and low-slope roofs have to stay watertight through slow drainage and heavy snow load. We quote and specify first-class applications that follow the manufacturer's installation details to the letter.

  • EPDM (black & white)
  • TPO
  • Built-up roofing (hot asphalt)
  • Standing seam metal
  • Composite slate
  • PVC
  • Green / inverted roofs

Buying a roof in Climate Zone 6

When you spend less, you get less. Here’s how to tell the difference.

What we evaluate before we quote

  • How many years of protection you can afford. 10, 15 and 20 years are common.
  • Whether removing the existing roof is right. It almost always is.
  • Your heating bills, and whether added insulation will pay you back.
  • Which roof system suits the building. Each has strengths and weaknesses.
  • Drainage. The less time a roof stays wet, the longer it lasts.

Questions to ask any roofer, including us

Does a live person answer when you call?
An answering machine on the first call is a preview of warranty service.
Can you visit their office during business hours?
Ask how long they've been in business and what training their crew leaders have.
Will they hand you insurance certificates?
Ask for General Liability and NYS Workers' Compensation. Your homeowner's policy will not cover injury to a contractor's crew or damage they cause.
Are they quoting exposed-fastener metal panels?
Those panels aren't eligible for a manufacturer's watertight system warranty.
Are they planning closed valleys?
Woven and "jersey cut" valleys are cheaper to install but poorly suited to our ice-prone Climate Zone 6.
Does the contract spell out the NYS Know Your Contractor Law?
Every element should be written into your agreement. Ours are.

Questions

Straight answers.

Anything else, call us. A person will pick up.

Do you remove the old roof or install over it?

We almost always recommend a full tear-off. It's the best way to find damaged decking, correct ventilation and get the longest life from the new system.

How long should a new commercial roof last?

It depends on the system and what you can invest. Coverage of 10, 15 and 20 years is common. We'll lay out the options, what each costs, and the performance trade-off that comes with a lower-cost specification.

Can you provide performance and payment bonds?

Yes. Gates Roofing Co., Inc. is eligible to provide performance and payment bonds, which are routinely required on formal commercial, state and federal projects.

Are you insured?

Fully. We provide certificates of insurance for General Liability and New York State Workers' Compensation on request.

Do you handle emergency roof leaks?

Yes, we offer 24/7 emergency response. Call 518-563-5090 any time.

Where do you work?

Plattsburgh and the surrounding counties of the North Country. Our commercial and government work has taken us across New York State, from Albany to Syracuse and Binghamton.
